Track & Field gehört zu den ersten von der Atari Corporation veröffentlichten Spielen für die 2600-Konsole.
Es ist das einzige Spiel, das Gebrauch vom mitgelieferten Arcade-Controller macht.
Das Spiel hätte eigentlich rechtzeitig zur XXIII. Sommer-Olympiade in Los Angeles im August 1984 erscheinen sollen, jedoch gab es Probleme bei der Teilebeschaffung, sodass das Spiel verschoben werden musste.
